I'm in great shape, says British champion
Danny Williams insists he still has the ability to become world heavyweight champion.
Williams will defend his British title against John McDermott in Dagenham on Friday, with his ambition of reaching the top of the game still very much in his mind.
He has resurrected his career since his crushing third round defeat to Audley Harrison in 2006, to the extent that connections of the WBC champion Sam Peter are said to be interested in making a fight.
Williams said: "I've totally turned my career back around since I lost to Harrison and I believe I'm now on the verge of another world title fight so that is a massive turn-around for me.
"Inconsistency has stopped me becoming a world champion. But now I've got a great new trainer and I'm in tremendous shape. The heavyweight division is very poor and I'm going to take advantage of that."
Bravery
In a division blighted by box office unknowns, Williams' name still stands tall as the man who beat Mike Tyson in 2004 before going on to show commendable bravery in defeat to Vitali Klitschko.
And after his superb and highly controversial stoppage win over unbeaten Russian Konstantin Airich in Spain in May, Williams has moved back up the rankings and into the frame for a title shot.
Williams added: "I'm going to be even better than I was in the Airich fight. People asked me what I was going to Spain for but I knew what I was doing. I'm in a strong position now and I will exploit it if I get past John."
