Cruiserweight out to unite titles, starting with WBO belt

Enzo Maccarinelli has vowed to take his frustrations out on Victor Emilio Ramirez in his quest to unify the cruiserweight division. The 28-year-old, defeated in his last unification attempt against David Haye, tops the bill in Manchester on March 14 when he takes on the 24-year-old Argentine for the vacant WBO title. Having been inactive for eight months following the second round knockout suffered at the hands of Haye, the Welshman was due to get a world title shot against Jonathan Banks last December. However, that bout was scuppered when the American pulled out through injury. He has now opted to challenge IBF champion Tomasz Adamek.

Terrible year

"The way the last year has gone I really don't care who is in the ring with me come March 14," Maccarinelli said. "It's been a terrible year. First there was the loss, then I was supposed to fight in July and then September. "Then there was everything that happened in the week before December 6 when another two guys pulled out. "I ended up fighting Mathew Ellis and proved my mind was right. Everyone could see from my body shape that I'm taking this game a lot more seriously now. "I've got a point to prove. I want to unify all the belts, beginning with Ramirez. This is the start of world domination for me." Despite Ramirez's 14-1 record, which has also seen him involved in one no contest, Maccarinelli is refusing to take his rival lightly. The South American did stop Alexander Alexeev in Germany nine days ago to win the WBO interim title.
Strong
"The Germans were raving about Alexeev as the next big thing and Ramirez stopped him in nine rounds," he said. "Ramirez is strong, hungry and comes forward. I just hope he's not as tough as the last Argentinian I boxed (Marcelo Dominguez in 2006) because that was like hitting a breeze block." Amir Khan will take on Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera on the same bill at the MEN Arena which will also include WBO super-featherweight champion Nicky Cook defending his title against undefeated mandatory challenger Roman Martinez from Puerto Rico.
