Filipino vacates lightweight title

Manny Pacquiao has officially vacated the WBC lightweight title to concentrate on fighting at higher weight classes. Pacquiao, who takes on Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas on May 2, won the belt when he stopped David Diaz in the ninth round of their contest last June, the Filipino's first bout at 135lb. The 30-year-old then stepped up two divisions in December to hand out an eight round beating to Oscar De La Hoya, cementing his position as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. The Hatton fight will take place at the 140lb light-welterweight limit, at which there are more possible 'superfights' further down the road for the man who won his first world title as a flyweight.
