Sunderland light-heavyweight too strong for Vayavoda

Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries enjoyed a dream professional debut in Barnsley with a first-round stoppage win over Aliaksandr Vayavoda of Belarus. The Sunderland 23-year-old, fighting just over the super-middleweight limit, was quickly into his stride against an opponent who boasted an unimpressive seven losses from his last eight contests. Roared on by his travelling army of supporters from the north-east, Jeffries took his time, clubbing two powerful right hands to the side of Vayavoda's head in the opening exchanges. Another booming straight right caused his opponent to temporarily lose his footing and by the end of the first round it was clear Jeffries was in for a successful night. And towards the end of the round a booming right hand to the temple jolted Vayavoda and referee Howard Foster had no hesitation in stepping in to call the contest off with 18 seconds of the round remaining.
