"2-Smooth" becomes two-weight champion after shock win

Jason Booth added the British super-bantamweight belt to his already impressive collection with a stoppage victory over Mark Moran at Leigh Indoor Sports Centre. Nottingham boxer Booth, 31, a Commonwealth bantam champion, stepped in at just 11 days notice to end Moran's reign after a deep cut forced the champion to relinquish his crown. The result was harsh on Booth who had completely outboxed southpaw Moran after stepping in for Matthew Marsh earlier in the week. Nottingham's '2 Smooth' Booth (32-5) was scheduled to challenge Lee Haskins for the British super-flyweight title on the same card, but the Bristol boxer pulled out through injury. Liverpool boxer Moran, 27, struggled to come to terms with Booth's pace in the opening stages and as the fight wore on it some became apparent that the belt would be changing hands. "2 Smooth" caught Moran at the beginning of the sixth round before a nasty clash of heads saw the champion sustain a deep cut above his left eye. The damage was too severe for the fight to continue and Booth went on to celebrate a memorable victory after moving up divisions. Speaking after the fight, Booth said: "I don't believe that! I put it down to experience and I he gave me loads of time and I was getting my shots off and he was not liking my tactics. "That head clash was an accident, it wasn't intentional. "I was planning a really hard night's work and all this hard training has paid off and with a bit of luck things work out your way - this is boxing for you."
