Stoke favourite proves too good for Ahmed

Chris Edwards retained his British and Commonwealth flyweight titles in front of his home crowd at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke, outclassing Derby cab driver Usman Ahmed. The former British super-flyweight champion had too much in his armoury for the inexperienced Ahmed, who entered the ring in nonchalant fashion despite a record of 5-1-1. Edwards, who finally gained his 13th win to go with 13 losses, out-worked a man six years his junior and looked the stronger fighter from the opening bell, consistently landing big shots, particularly with the left hook, to retain the belts. To his credit, Ahmed showed tremendous heart to continually fight back in the face of a persistent onslaught, landing enough shots of his own to keep referee Phil Edwards from ending it early. However, the pencil-thin puncher lacked the power of the champion in his first 12-rounder, as Edwards continued to wade forward in search of the knockout. Ahmed looked ready to go in the eighth after taking another big right towards the end of the round, but was determined to see the final bell and duly did, although scores of 118-109, 117-111 and 118-109 predictably went against him.
