Promoter and super-feather champ scoop top prizes

Frank Maloney and Rendall Munroe have scooped top awards from European Boxing Union. Maloney was named Promoter of the Year while his super-bantamweight charge was named Boxer of the Year. Munroe, the boxing binman, won the European title by beating champion Kiko Martinez in March 2008 and went on to make three defences before the year was out - and two more so far in 2009, including winning the Commonwealth title against Isaac Nerry He is now ranked third by the WBC and IBF and poised for a move into world-title contention, but still gets up to do his bin round in Leicester before heading off to training. "It was nice to get my award, but I was even more delighted for Rendall because he is old school fighter," said Maloney. "Success hasn't changed him one bit and however much money he makes I think he'll never give up work as a dustman. "The shame was that Rendall had no idea about the award so he missed the ceremony. When I got there the EBU asked where he was, but nobody had told me that he'd won." Munroe is expected back in the ring later this year and could face experienced Italian Simone Maludrottu in either a European title defence or world title eliminator. Maloney's award comes at the end of a year in which he also guided Jamie Moore to European success, but saw Ian Napa lose his bantamweight crown.
