Training camp backons for Olympian

Unbeaten light-heavyweight Tony Jeffries is heading off to the Algarve for a two-week training camp ahead of his next fight in October. The Olympic bronze medallist has won all three of his fights since joining the paid ranks and the popular Sunderland banger returns to action at the Seaburn Centre on October 16. Before then, he will join fellow Mackem Dave Ferguson and Blackpool's Brian Rose on the trip to Portugal, where he will undergo gruelling mountain training runs. "This is a strategy I picked up when I managed Lennox Lewis," said promoter Frank Maloney. "For many of his big fights Lennox would go to camp two weeks before most of his team and work on fitness. "The running the boys will be doing is high up in the mountains and they will all benefit from this before returning home. "It is hard work and I reckon they will hate me at the end of it."
