Simpson beats Truscott again to retain Commonwealth title
John Simpson retained his Commonwealth featherweight title with a tenth round stoppage of former champion Paul Truscott on Friday night.
Truscott lost the belt to Simpson in January with a cut in the 8th round after a clash of heads.
The Middlesbrough fighter was again cut in this bloody re-match in his hometown - but this time earlier in the contest.
First his right eye was cut in the second round before his left eye was also cut in the third.
The 23-year-old bravely fought on but received a standing count in the ninth round before he was stopped by the 26-year-old Scot after heavy punishment in the tenth.
Former British featherweight champion Simpson told
Sky Sports afterwards that his greater maturity had helped him do the double over the Middlesbrough fighter.
Hat off
"I'm pretty satisfied - I take my hat off to Paul, he's a really, really tough boy. A nice boxer as well so he's not just tough," he said, adding that he is more experienced than Truscott.
"I'm more mature and older and I think that showed tonight."
Simpson hopes to now fight current holder Martin Lindsay to try and regain the British title, admitting: "That's the fight I really want."
