British boxer planning to fight on for two or three years

Junior Witter insists he never had any intention of quitting boxing as he prepares to make his comeback from an elbow injury at welterweight. The British boxer failed to claim the vacant WBC light-welterweight title in his last outing, retiring before the ninth round against Devon Alexander. But rather than contemplate his future following a second loss in three bouts, the 35-year-old is instead planning for an autumn return to the ring. Refreshed after a break, Witter will make the switch to welterweight having struggled to get down to the 140lb limit in recent times.

Blow-out

"I went away on holiday for a week for a good little blow-out which I needed. But I never thought that I wouldn't come back," he told the Bradford Telegrpah & Argus. "The elbow is getting better after some rest and fighting at welterweight will suit me much better. "The body doesn't like losing weight the older you get and getting rid of the last four pounds absolutely killed me." Witter, who had planned to fight at 147lbs before losing the WBC strap to Timothy Bradley in 2008, believes he can keep fighting for another two or three years yet. "This is going to be a different challenge for me," he admitted. "I'm going to have to prove myself again as I have all through my career. "I've gone back to the drawing board but I've always planned to fight on for two or three more years and I don't see any reason to change that."
