Scot handed chance to win back the British title

Barry Morrison has been handed the chance to become British champion for the second time. The Motherwell light-welterweight will take on Lenny Daws for the now-vacant belt at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday, September 18, live on Sky Sports. The 29-year-old, who beat Daws in January 2007 to claim the belt but lost it in his first defence to Colin Lynes, has been been given his chance after Ajose Olusegan vacated. Olusegan has been handed a WBC final eliminator against Romania's Ionut Dan Ion next month, giving Morrison a chance of returning to the title scene. He has been forced to pull out of clashes with the former champion and Paul McCloskey through injury, while he has also seen a rematch with David Barnes - who out-pointed him in 2008 - fall through.

Relishing

And promoter Tommy Gilmour believes Morrison is primed to make the most of his welcome change in luck. "Barry has battled through a period of illnesses, injury and setbacks, and he's ready for this but the other guy will also be relishing it," he told the Hamilton Advertiser. "Morrison is one of the few boxers who have beaten him so he'll be looking for revenge. However, let's just say that with Barry training as well as he has been, this isn't a good time for Lenny to be getting him. "This is a huge fight for Barry. He's got the chance again and it's make-or-break for him because others will want a shot at this title. "He's got the ability, I have absolutely no doubt about that." Gilmour also went on to add that, having been scheduled to appear on the September 18 undercard, the late call-up will not affect Morrison's conditioning.
