Former cruiserweight champion steps up to beat Golota
Poland's Tomasz Adamek announced himself on the heavyweight scene with a five-round demolition of former contender Andrew Golota on Saturday night.
Watched by 17,000 fans in Lodz, the two Poles were expected to give value for money but in reality it proved to be a lop-sided win for the former WBC light-heavyweight and IBF cruiserweight king.
Tipping the scales at 214 on his first foray into the division, Adamek was dwarfed by an overweight Golota who had been out of the ring for almost a year.
And the 41-year-old, whose fights with Riddick Bowe in 1996 are the stuff of legend, appears booked for overdue retirement after being overwhelmed by his speedier, hungrier opponent.
Adamek dropped the veteran in the opening round and dominated the next three before the end came in the fifth, Golota crushed by a classic left-right combination.
To his credit, Golota beat the count but was unable to fend off the in-rushing Adamek and referee Bill Clancy was quick to intervene.
While Golota must surely now head for the exit, Adamek is poised to take over his mantle as Poland's leading heavyweight, although his team suggested afterwards that if the money was right a return to the 200lb limit remains an option for the 32-year-old.
