Welsh boxer hopes to take Prizefighter title

Barrie Jones has his sights firmly set on Prizefighter light-welterweight glory and is hoping to achieve one over his brother by beating Gavin Rees. Jones has been included in the line-up at short-notice due to illness resulting in Barry Morrison's withdrawal. The result means Wales have three representatives with Jones joining Rees and Jason Cook. No Welsh fighter has ever won the Prizefighter title giving Jones an added incentive. Jones said: "Any fight is going to be hard but I know if I box to my ability then I can win Prizefighter quite comfortably but I have to turn up." The confident 24-year-old knows that he would have to overcome former WBA champion Gavin Rees in order to be crowned champion. Jones said: "I never fought Gavin as an amateur but my brother Robert did. He lost to Gavin a couple of times but there wasn't much in it. "It was along time ago but it would be nice to get one over Gavin so I can tease my brother."

Respects

Jones undefeated in his first 15 professional bouts, then suffered three successive defeats including a loss to Kell Brook with the British welterweight title on the line. Jones respects the Welsh contenders and is under no illusions about the contest. He said: "I've known Gavin and Jason for years and always watched them and respected them. "They're good boys, have fought at a very high level and will be a tough fight for anyone. "But I have to concentrate fully on my first fight and I can't look past Young Mutley."
