Commonwealth champion has belief in title credentials

Lee McAllister believes he can become Scotland's 'next big thing' as he prepares to defend his Commonwealth lightweight title against Ghanaian Samuel Amoako next Friday. The Aberdonian travels to Glasgow to headline the Sky Sports Fight Night, already looking ahead to bigger and better things. The Amoako contest will represent McAllister's second title defence but the 27-year-old believes he can go on to compete for world honours. "Scottish boxing has always had icons and I want to be the next one," the self-styled Aberdeen Assassin said. "There have been Scottish fighters in the past like Jim Watt and Ken Buchanan, and recently Scott Harrison, who have been great fighters. "They have been world champions and I want to follow in their footsteps. I am the new kid on the block and I believe I can go on to make my mark. "I am being given the opportunity to fight live on television next week which is great and that will inspire me in my bid to be the next best thing in Scottish boxing. "I know I can take it and I can't wait until I get in to the ring." Promoter Tommy Gilmour is confident McAllister will take care of business against the inexperienced Amoako, who is having only his seventh pro' fight. "I am happy with Lee's self-belief," said the Scot. "He is so confident in his ability and he will have hundreds coming down from Aberdeen to see him in action as well as all the others who will watch the fight at Bellahouston and on the television. "My job is to create opportunities for him and I have been able to do that. "As Lee likes to say, I do thinking - and he takes the punches. He's got the ability, no doubt about it and I look forward to him progressing."
