European champion set for showdown in Doncaster
Jamie McDonnell is set for a South Yorkshire homecoming after
stopping Jerome Arnould to capture the vacant European bantamweight crown.
The 23-year-old inflicted the biggest upset of the year - travelling to France to take the crown having earlier toppled Ian Napa to win the vacant British and Commonwealth titles two-months ago.
Frank Maloney's unsung ring hero is set for a possible rematch against Napa at Doncaster Dome in what would be a big domestic attraction.
Maloney said: "There are a lot of options available and the British Boxing Board of Control have ordered a rematch against Napa.
"That would be a triple title fight and be a big domestic attraction with all the titles up for grabs.
"If Jamie decides not to go in that direction then he will have to relinquish his British championship."
McDonnell (14-2-1) who has yet to be defeated in his 10 fights in Doncaster has surprised promoter Maloney in his rapid rise to stardom.
Too soon
He said: "I got a call late on Saturday night telling me about the win when I was having a drink with friends. At first I thought I must have been drinking too much.
"I have to be honest and admit that when Jamie beat Napa and was offered the Arnould fight I thought it was a bit too soon to face a world class campaigner."
With McDonnell due to fight his European mandatory in around nine months time, Maloney is keeping his challenger options firmly open.
He said: "There are a stack of options for him, but no decision will be made until I have met with Jamie and his team.
"He will fight close to home though because he has had to travel to London and the French Riviera to win his titles.
"Looking at the latest ratings it could be Malik Bouziane or Napa."
