Smith looking to respond after DeGale defeat

Former British super-middleweight champion Paul Smith is eagerly anticipating his return to the ring in May. The Liverpool-born fighter, 28, will want to respond from his defeat to James DeGale last year and has dropped down to middleweight to form part of the undercard to Frank Warren's "This is It" show at the O2 Arena. Nathan Cleverly takes on Jurgen Braehmer for the WBO light-heavyweight title while DeGale will defend his crown against George Groves on 21st May. Smith, meanwhile, now finds himself in a lively domestic division and is looking to get back on track having teamed up with Manchester trainer Joe Gallagher. "I can't wait to get back in the ring," said Smith. "I've made a few changes since the DeGale fight and I feel refreshed. "It's time for a new challenge and that is winning belts at middleweight.

Buzz

"Going to Joe's gym in Manchester has really given me the buzz back. It's the same situation as when I was with Billy Graham up in Manchester at the start of my career. "Every day you are surrounded by great pros, and it is an inspiration, it really is. "Sparring is second to none and that's going to stand me in good stead when I'm fighting for titles." Matt Macklin, Darren Barker and Martin Murray are all potential opponents for Smith and he still has big ambitions for his future career. "They are all quality fighters," Smith added. "I've never bad-mouthed anyone, and I won't start now. But I'd love a top British name in the next six months. "I loved being British champion at super-middleweight, and I want to have the same kind of success at middleweight. "Barker seems keen to fight a big British name, so why not start with me."
