The opening day of competition at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday features two of Scotland's brightest medal hopes.

Michael Jamieson and Hannah Miley have the chance to give the host nation a flying start in Glasgow in the evening session at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Glasgow-born Jamieson goes in the 200m breaststroke, the event he won silver in at the 2012 Olympics, while Miley is defending her 400m individual medley title.

A total of 20 gold medals are handed out on Thursday, starting with the women's triathlon at Strathclyde Country Park.

The men's triathlon follows in the afternoon where Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee and brother Jonny headline England's challenge. South Africa's Richard Murray will be their main rival on recent form.

Sir Bradley Wiggins makes his return to the track for England in the team pursuit, his only appearance of the Games as he looks to fill one of the few remaining gaps in his medal collection.

Wiggins has won four Olympic titles - including the team pursuit in 2008 - but three silvers are his best results at the Commonwealth Games, the most recent of those coming 12 years ago in Manchester.

England, who also have double Olympic champion Ed Clancy in their four-man line-up, face stiff competition from Australia and New Zealand.

The other medals to be decided at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome are in the women's 500m time-trial, women's sprint B2 tandem and men's team sprint.
