Max Whitlock: Bidding to make it three golds from three events in Glasgow on Thursday

Thursday sees cycling leave the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and hit the streets of Glasgow for a Home Nations showdown in the men’s individual time trials, while English gymnast Max Whitlock vies to complete a remarkable Commonwealth hat-trick.

Following Wednesday's Home Nations dominance in the gymnastics arena - Whitlock claiming gold in the men's all-around event before England took all three places on the rostrum in the women's event - Thursday promises another day of thrills and celebrations for the British contingent.

While Sir Bradley Wiggins may be giving the men's road race a miss, England, Wales and Scotland all have ambitions of claiming gold on the 40km course.

It is being billed as a straight shootout between the Home Nations with England's Alex Dowsett heading into the duel as favourite.

Fresh from his Tour de France exploits Dowsett's Team Sky team-mate Geraint Thomas represents Wales, while Scotland's David Millar has a point to prove following his omission from Garmin-Sharp’s team for Le Tour.

In the women’s individual time trial Emma Pooley, who yesterday announced she will retire after the Commonwealth Games, makes her penultimate appearance alongside England team-mate and individual pursuit champion Joanna Rowsell.

Hat-trick hopes

After adding all-around success to his team gold on Wednesday afternoon, Whitlock will lock horns with his English compatriots on the pommel horse.

London 2012 silver medallist Louis Smith made a triumphant return from injury in the team event earlier in the week and heads into his specialist discipline as favourite; but Scotland’s Daniel Keatings will be desperate to thwart the English supremacy and place a gold among the two silvers he has already claimed on home soil.

Back on the track at Hampden Park, Australia's Sally Pearson will again look to light up the athletics stage and add Commonwealth gold to the Olympic title she won in world record time at London 2012.

Another world record breaker in London two years ago was David Rudisha - the most dominant track athlete on show at the Glasgow Games - and the Kenyan takes centre stage once more in the men’s 800m final as he bids to put a Commonwealth medal alongside his world and Olympic crowns.

England’s Adam Gemili goes for another sprint medal in the men's 200m after finishing runner-up to Jamaica’s Kemar Bailey-Cole in the 100m final on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, England men's hockey team face Canada for a place in the semi-final and England square off against Scotland for bronze in the Open Triples lawn bowls.
