Jack Laugher combined with Chris Mears to claim his second gold of the Commonwealth Games as Tom Daley was forced to settle for an agonising silver.

Laugher, the one-metre springboard individual champion on Wednesday, added a second title in the men's 3m synchro as he and Mears finished with a total of 431.94 to triumph at Edinburgh's Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Australia's Matthew Mitcham and Grant Nel - on the podium alongside Laugher on the opening day of diving competition - took silver with 403.14.

A second English pair reached the podium as Nick Robinson-Baker and Freddie Woodward of England claimed bronze with 364.41.

The Commonwealth Games have been an absolute dream for me. I was hoping, if I could get lucky, to come away with three medals.

For Laugher the victory made up for relinquishing gold medal position in the individual three-metres event and finishing with silver on Thursday.

Their best dive was an inward three-and-a-half somersault which scored 85.68 - one of three scores in the eighties in their six-dive set.

"It was amazing," Laugher said. "The Commonwealth Games have been an absolute dream for me. I was hoping, if I could get lucky, to come away with three medals.

"To come away with two golds and a silver is absolutely fantastic. To do the last one with my best mate and to get that alongside each other is what we've been dreaming of all year."

Tom Daley and James Denny almost added a second gold of the day for England after a near-perfect final dive in the men's 10m platform synchro left them 0.18 points behind Australian duo Mitcham and Domonic Bedggood.

As there were only four pairs in the competition just two medals were awarded and the English duo, a new partnership, had looked out of contention entering the sixth dive.

But the pair finished with a forward four-and-a-half somersault which scored 95.46 to record a total of 399.36, which Mitcham and Bedggood scraped past with their own final dive.
