Commonwealth Games: Stage set for Lizze Armitstead, home nations go for gold in badminton and squash

Lizzie Armitstead: Favourite to win gold in the women's cycling road race

The Commonwealth Games concludes on Sunday with the men’s and women’s road cycling events taking centre stage.

The events take place during the day and although there is home nations interest in both it is the former race which is expected to yield a British gold medal.

Lizzie Armitstead lines up for England and has been earmarked as the favourite, with her elite turn of speed a major asset in what his likely to be a sprint finish.

In the men’s event Australia are generally regarded to have the strongest team but Wales’ Geraint Thomas may well be in contention to win if a sprint is avoided. Andrew Fenn leads the charge for Scotland.

Elsewhere on the final day of competition, there will be an all-England final in the badminton’s mixed doubles as Chris and Gabrielle Adcock take on Chris Langridge and Heather Olver for the the gold medal.

Scotland have the chance to win gold in the women’s singles as Kirsty Gilmour takes on Michelle Li in the final.

Home interest

There is also plenty of home nations interest in the squash as England go for gold in both the men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Peter Barker and Alison Waters are hoping to win the mixed title while Adrian Grant and Nick Matthew will be aiming for men’s gold. Both teams will be up against Australian pairings.

In the men's hockey final, India will face Australia in a repeat of the final from four years ago when the Aussies romped home 8-0.

World champions Australia are the four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallists and have lost only one game in the history of the tournament - 3-2 to South Africa in the pool stages at Kuala Lumpur 1998.

England will have to content themselves with bronze medal contests in both the netball and men’s hockey, with those teams facing Jamaica and New Zealand respectively for the third place on the podium.

The closing ceremony takes place at Hampden Park from 8pm (BST) with the Commonwealth Games Federation flag to be entrusted to officials from Australia's Gold Coast, the hosts of the 2018 Games.
