England head coach Chris Silverwood will return home after day two of the second Test against New Zealand due to a family bereavement.

The 44-year-old, who was appointed last month, will be replaced for the final three days of the Test in Hamilton by assistant coaches Graham Thorpe and Paul Collingwood.

England are looking to avoid defeat in the two-Test series in New Zealand after being thrashed by an innings and 65 runs in the first encounter at Mount Maunganui.

Michael Atherton, David Lloyd and Ian Ward discuss Chris Silverwood's early departure from New Zealand and how England should approach the second Test in Hamilton

Speaking earlier on Tuesday, Silverwood explained how he and his coaches will try to relieve the pressure on captain Joe Root amid his batting struggles.

The 28-year-old scored just 13 runs across two innings in the defeat to New Zealand, and his average for the year is just 27.4 from 10 Tests.

Root's average since assuming the captaincy in February 2017 now stands at 39.7, which compares unfavourably to his pre-captaincy average of 52.8.

Silverwood said: "Behind the scenes we've got to keep trying to strip away the things he doesn't have to worry about, making sure that when it comes to practice he's just one of the lads, he's in there and he's worried about his batting and that's it.

"So there's things like that and helping him and talking to him and try to strip pressure away."
