New Zealand bowler takes 6-16 as Eagles defeat Glamorgan

Tim Southee included a hat-trick in his figures of 6-16 as Essex secured a five-wicket win over Glamorgan in their Friends Life t20 clash at Chelmsford. The paceman took four wickets in the final over as the visitors reached a total of 144-9, with Gareth Rees (38) and Stewart Walters (37) scoring the majority of their runs. The Eagles did not have it all their own way during the chase as they stood at just 36-3 after the first six overs, but some big hitting from Scott Styris (42) saw them over the finish line. Earlier, Glamorgan looked well set for a late assault when they passed the 100 mark with only two wickets down but a late collapse would cost them dear. Nick James (13), Walters and Alex Jones were Southee's hat-trick victims, with the New Zealander also dismissing Mark Wallace for a duck with the final ball to claim the best figures by an Essex bowler in the competition's history. Skipper Mark Pettini capitalised on being dropped by Walters to bolster the Essex reply with a knock of 33 while many of his top-order colleagues fell cheaply. The hosts were given another setback when both he and Matt Walker (28) fell in quick succession but Styris and Ryan ten Doeschate (14 not out) saw out the victory. Styris hit two sixes in one Simon Jones over and also smashed Alex Jones over the ropes twice as he finished unbeaten on 42 from just 21 balls. He was caught on the long-on boundary in the 19th over but the umpires deemed the delivery from Mike O'Shea to be above waist height and a no-ball, allowing Essex to complete the win with five balls to spare.
