England batsman Jonathan Trott has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.

The Warwickshire player was recalled from an absence of over a year for the recent tour of the West Indies but struggled badly with the bat.

Trott managed only 72 runs in his six innings in the Caribbean but 59 of those runs came in one knock in the second Test in Grenada.

This was a tough decision to make but I don’t feel my game is at the level you need to be at to play for England.

Three of those innings ended in ducks and Trott scored only nine runs in the third Test defeat in Barbados that ensured the series ended 1-1.

The 34-year-old left England’s Ashes Tour in 2013/14, a series that ended in a 5-0 whitewash, with a stress-related illness.

He spent time away from cricket early last year before returning with his county Warwickshire, where he scored enough runs to return to international consideration, first with the England Lions and then with a senior call for the trip to the West Indies.

Trott was selected to open, ahead of Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth, but only once managed to look comfortable against a barrage of quick bowling.

He retires after playing in 52 Tests, during which he scored 3,835 runs at an average of 44.08. Trott also featured in 68 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20 matches.

“This was a tough decision to make but I don’t feel my game is at the level you need to be at to play for England. I was honoured to be given the opportunity to come back and play international cricket again and I’m disappointed it didn’t work out," Trott said.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me and given me the chance to represent England and to thank supporters for all their backing over the years. I also want to wish the lads all the very best for what will be an incredibly exciting summer.

“I’ve had incredible highs and some real lows in an England shirt but wouldn’t change a thing. I look forward to continuing my career at Warwickshire and hopefully helping us win more silverware.”
