Ryan Sidebottom's five-wicket haul and a half-century from Peter Handscomb helped Yorkshire take control on day two of their Specsavers County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton.
Somerset, still chasing a first victory in the Championship, resumed 161 runs behind at 41-3 in their first innings, but Sidebottom's 5-56 - which included his 750th first-class wicket - saw the home side skittled for 224.
Dom Bess struck an early blow with the ball when he had Yorkshire opener Adam Lyth lbw for 10, however, Handscomb's 57 not out helped see Yorkshire on to 127-2, and a lead of 105, when bad light ended play six overs early.
Stoneman, not out on 181 overnight, fell just short of his double century when he was caught behind off Neil Wagner (3-110) as Surrey collapsed from 353-5 to 3999 all out - Jamie Porter taking 4-102.
Essex finished the day just 32 runs shy of that score on 367-7 thanks to Ryan ten Doeschate's efforts - the captain sharing in a standout 120-run partnership with Ravi Bopara (64) for the fifth wicket.
Meanwhile, no play was possible at between Lancashire and Middlesex at Southport because of heavy rain.
