So who better than a man well-versed in previous battles between the two, Sky Sports' Michael Atherton, to take you through the history of the series?

As well as his own match-saving 185 not out in Johannesburg and Trent Bridge tussle with Donald, there's Devon Malcom's nine-for at The Oval, Hansie Cronje's corruption in 2000 and Graeme Smith's slaying of three England captains.
Root will hope for a better outcome this year as he leads England for the first time, with the hosts looking to retain the Basil D'Oliveira Trophy they won in South Africa 18 months ago.
