The amateur cricket club at the centre of a fair play row have been relegated by a disciplinary committee, but will be allowed to remain as league champions.

In the final game of the season, Carew Cricket Club in Pembrokeshire declared their first innings in the third over when they were 18-1, preventing their opponents Cresselly the chance of earning any bowling bonus points.

That meant Cresselly could not overtake them at the top of the table. Carew had started the day 21 points clear, with teams earning 20 points for a win.

Cresselly went on to win the match, but Carew took the title.

Pembroke County Cricket Club, which runs the league, held a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday night and decided that while Carew had not broken any rules, the team had not acted in the spirit of the game.

The committee, therefore, decided to allow them to remain as league champions for 2017, but relegate them, so they will play next season in Pembrokeshire County Cricket Club Division Two.
