Another intriguing day of cricket has left the fourth Test delicately poised with the prospect of another tight, tense finish easy to foresee after Ali spun England back into contention on the south coast.

"Apart from his nightmare winter in Australia, he's never really let England down," Bob says of the all-rounder, who was recalled to play in his first Test of the summer. Having found form with Worcestershire, Ali scored a valuable 40 on day one and claimed his second Test five-for in Southampton on day two.

Consistency has long been Ali's problem but he is "running hot" at the moment, Angus says, and with other players struggling for form, England can be glad to have someone who is on top of their game at the moment.

India did eek out a first-innings lead though, largely thanks to a fine unbeaten knock of 132 from Pujara, who was also on the outside looking in at the beginning of the series. "He's a class act," Angus says, and without his runs England might be in control of this Test.

The rest of the India batsmen will not have been quite so happy with how they played with Ravichandran Ashwin's shot to get out described as "horrendous" by Bob.
