Former captain Younus Khan has been recalled in Pakistan's 17-man squad for the one-day series in Australia.
Middle order batsman Younus stood down as national skipper in November and made himself unavailable for the Tests in New Zealand and Australia.
He subsequently attempted to regain form by playing for Habib Bank in Pakistan domestic cricket but has struggled for runs.
"Younus is a big-match player and his performance in the domestic matches are not a yardstick for his selection," explained chief selector Iqbal Qasim.
"We wanted (Younus) to play the domestic matches to bring back his focus and keep his fitness."
Mohammad Yousuf, who has led Pakistan since Younus' resignation, will continue as skipper in the 50-over format.
The series against Australia, which begins in Brisbane on January 22, sees all five matches squeezed into a 10-day period, followed by a solitary T20 international at the MCG on February 5.
After the one-day series, Younus and Yousuf will return home because they are not part of Pakistan's 16-man Twenty20 squad, which is led by Shahid Afridi.
