Sunny's six wickets cannot overcome time lost due to rain

A six-wicket haul from Elias Sunny could not stop the rain-affected first Test between Bangladesh and West Indies in Chittagong from ending in an expected draw. After days two and three were completely washed out, the Tigers did what they could to force a positive result but the inevitable stalemate was confirmed on the final day. The tourists' first innings reached 244 all out in the morning, with captain Darren Sammy contributing a quick and useful 58. Bangladesh then declared on 119-3 to set their opponents a victory target of 226, but could only take two wickets before the close as West Indies safely saw out 22 overs before time was called. Left-arm spinner Sunny added to his tally from the first innings when he trapped Kraigg Brathwaite lbw for a duck in the first over, before Lendl Simmons and Kirk Edwards calmed the nerves with a 53-run stand. Simmons was caught at mid-on by Rubel Hossain off the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan for 44 but Edwards (28 not out) and Darren Bravo (24no) remained at the crease until the captains called the game off with 15 overs left. Bangladesh had earlier built a 106-run lead after Sunny's figures of 6-94 had helped dismiss the Windies during the morning session after resuming on 144-5.

Five-for

Marlon Samuels was the first to go as he became Sunny's fourth victim when he was caught at short cover by Raqibul Hasan for 30. Sunny then bowled Carlton Baugh round his legs for 24 to become the fourth Bangladesh bowler to take a five-for on debut. But the ship had already been steadied somewhat, as Baugh combined with skipper Sammy for a seventh-wicket stand of 60 that helped dampen any expectations of a dramatic final day result. Sammy was left with the tail and eventually finished with 58 off just 43 balls, including two sixes, before he was the penultimate man out after top-edging a Shakib (3-53) delivery to wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim. The hosts then looked to quickly add to their lead and set West Indies a tricky total but lost Imrul Kayes before lunch, the opener being caught behind by Baugh off the bowling of Ravi Rampaul for 13. Tamim Iqbal looked well set until he got an outside edge to a Sammy delivery and was also snapped up by Baugh to depart for 37. Shahriar Nafees managed to register his sixth Test fifty but was then bowled off an inside edge by Samuels without adding any more runs, prompting the declaration from Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur.
