Heavy rain washed out the entire fourth day's play in the opening Test between Bangladesh and South Africa at Chittagong.

Match officials at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium called off play at 1:25pm with the rain continuing to fall.

The match now looks set to end in a draw with South Africa poised to resume the final day on 61-0 in their second innings, with openers Stiaan van Zyle and Dean Elgar unbeaten on 33 and 28 respectively.

The Proteas trail the hosts by 17 runs after conceding a first-innings lead of 78 runs.

Rain and bad light had also forced early finishes to the second and third days, with South Africa making 248 in their first innings and Bangladesh scoring 326 in reply.

The Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur will host the second and final Test of the series from next Thursday.
