Yorkshire youngster Ben Coad produced another stirring display, taking 4-47, as they reduced Warwickshire to 152-8 on day one of their Specsavers County Championship Division One clash at Edgbaston.

Only 48.3 overs were possible on a rainy Friday in the midlands, but the 23-year-old Coad - who impressed with eight wickets in Yorkshire's defeat to Hampshire to open the season - ripped through the home side's top order.

Veteran West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul impressed on day one of Lancashire's game against Surrey at The Oval, striking an unbeaten 85.

The visitors had been in trouble at 67-5 in the morning session - Mark Footitt (3-90) again impressive, taking three of those wickets - but Chanderpaul led the Lancashire recovery.

The 42-year-old put on an unbroken 172-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Jordan Clarke (108no) - who brought up a swift century just before stumps - as Lancashire closed on 294-6.

A hugely impressive team bowling performance saw Essex skittle Somerset for 209 on the opening day of their encounter in Taunton.

The wickets were shared among the attack - Ashar Zaidi taking 3-17, while Ravi Bopara (2-10), Simon Harmer (2-51) and Neil Wagner (2-78) finishing with two each.

Robson shared in a 105-run stand for the second wicket with Stevie Eskinazi (82) as Middlesex dominated the early exchanges, but their hosts fought back with the ball late in the day.

A spell of four wickets for just 49 runs in the final session saw Hampshire fight their way back into the game ahead of the second day.
