RL Cup review: Alex Blake hundred in vain as Somerset beat Kent at Taunton

Kent batsman Alex Blake registered an incredible 46-ball hundred but was still on the losing side as Somerset chased down 353 to make it three wins from three in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Blake, 28, had never before reached three figures in List A cricket but did so in style at Taunton, peppering the boundary rope at will, eventually out for 116 from 58 balls with 10 fours and seven sixes.

His destructive innings built on Daniel Bell-Drummond's more circumspect 106 from 120 deliveries as Kent amassed a mammoth 352 for six after opting to bat first.

But, despite losing Steven Davies to his third consecutive duck, Somerset reeled in the total with four wickets and 15 balls to spare, largely thanks to the efforts of all-rounder Peter Trego.

The 35-year-old blazed six sixes and as many fours in his 135 off 119 balls, while knocks of 55 from Dean Elgar and 64 from James Hildreth got them close before Roelof van der Merwe and Lewis Gregory got them over the line.

Despite a day to forget for their bowlers, they sit top of the South Group on six points, with Essex hot on their heels after claiming a second win from two games by edging out Surrey by one wicket.

Put into the field, Essex managed to restrict Surrey to 210 all out from 47.4 overs, with Ben Foakes once again their mainstay - following up his 92 in a losing cause at Somerset last week with 77 from 92 balls at the Oval.

But the total nearly proved beyond Essex and they relied on an unbroken last-wicket stand of 19 from Simon Harmer (44no) and Matthew Quinn (7no) to carry them to victory with four balls to spare after Jade Dernbach had given Surrey hope with four for 31.

Sussex claimed their first win in this year's competition after defeating Glamorgan by 59 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Stiaan van Zyl struck 96 from 88 deliveries after the south coast county opted to bat first as they reached 292 for six from their allotment, a total that was lowered to 281 from 43 overs due to rain in Glamorgan's reply.

It proved a total beyond them despite half-centuries from Chris Cooke (62) and captain Jacques Rudolph (51) as they were all out for 221 in 40 overs.

In the North Group, Nottinghamshire successfully chased a rain-revised 286 from 47 overs to down Derbyshire by four wickets with four balls to spare.

England's limited-overs opener Alex Hales warmed up for this week's one-day international series with Ireland with a brisk 77 from 58 balls, while Riki Wessels (67) and Samit Patel (59) also chipped in with meaningful contributions.

Earlier, Billy Bodleman (90) and Ben Slater (72) put on a 148-run opening stand for Derbyshire while Wayne Madsen chipped in with an unbeaten 66 in Derbyshire's 303 for four - a total lowered following rain midway through Nottinghamshire's innings.
