Worcestershire batsman Joe Clarke signs new three-year deal

Teenage batsman Joe Clarke has signed a new three-year deal with Worcestershire, keeping him at New Road until the end of 2018.

The 19-year-old, who has scored four half-centuries in seven first-class matches for the Pears, has represented England at under-19 level.

He recently hit an unbeaten 131 against Gloucestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Clarke said: "It is really pleasing to get asked to sign a long-term contract.

"I see Worcestershire as a good place to develop my career. I've talked to Moeen Ali quite a lot about the route he has gone down with Worcestershire and my aim is to play for England.

"I feel as a youngster there are a lot of opportunities at Worcestershire to play first-team cricket. It is a massive opportunity in these next three years for me to push myself and become a first-team regular.”

The county’s director of cricket Steve Rhodes is delighted to have tied Clarke down: "He is a bright prospect, a terrific batter, can keep wicket and he is certainly one for the future.

"One of the policies we've got in place is to try and keep hold of our best young players and he is one of our best young players so I'm delighted he has signed a three-year contract."
