Jason Gillespie: No ECB contact over England job

Jason Gillespie admits it is "very flattering" to be linked with the role of England head coach but says there has been no contact with the ECB.

Yorkshire coach Gillespie is the favourite to replace Peter Moores, who was sacked earlier this month following the appointment of Andrew Strauss as England’s new director of cricket.

England players past and present endorsed Gillespie's credentials on Tuesday, but the former Australia fast bowler insists he is happy at Headingley - at least for the time being.

"It's very flattering. (But) I love my job here at Yorkshire," Gillespie told BBC Sport. "The Yorky boys have been giving me enough grief about it, which has been quite funny. But I haven't had any contact and until that happens I can't say anything.

"It would certainly take some persuading (to leave). I wake up every morning and I'm in my dream job. It's just fantastic, but I don't know what the future holds."

England batsman Garry Ballance knows Gillespie well from Yorkshire, and speaking from Lord's ahead of Thursday's first Test against New Zealand he said: "If he was appointed I'm sure he'd do a good job.

"He's obviously a quality coach. He's played a lot of international cricket and done very well, and at Yorkshire he's got the best out of all the players."

Another Yorkshireman, former England captain Michael Vaughan, told Sky Sports News HQ: "He's jsut a good man, full of energy and the kind of know-how you need at the highest level.

"If England can persuade him to go for the role I'm pretty sure he'd do a fantastic job."

Gillespie's former international team-mate Justin Langer ruled himself out of the reckoning after signing a two-year contract extension with Western Australia overnight.

And in the meantime the role of leading England into the Test summer falls to Moores' former assistant Paul Farbrace.

Asked if he would like the job permanently, the interim coach told the BBC: "It would be very hard to say no to it wouldn't it? It really would.

"I've got this chance to work with the England team for this series against New Zealand and I'm just going to give it a really good go.

"I'm going to enjoy it, make the most of it, have a lot of fun doing it and, if at the end of it something happens, great, if it doesn't, well, no problem, but I will certainly have enjoyed my time doing it."
