Daniel Bell-Drummond's century not enough for Kent v Leicestershire
Wednesday 6 May 2015 19:42, UK
Daniel Bell-Drummond hit a fine century but Kent came up just short of victory in their Division Two clash with Leicestershire.
The visitors were seeking their first County Championship win since September 2012, but it was Kent who came closer to victory before settling for a draw in the closing moments, 42 runs short of their target.
They were set 315 for victory at Canterbury, with Leicestershire losing their final two wickets for only seven runs, Ivan Thomas taking one of them to return figures of 4-48.
Kent's chase started poorly with Charlie Shreck striking twice to remove Joe Denly (9) and captain Rob Key for seven to reduce them to 40-2.
Bell-Drummond and Brendan Nash added 105 for the third wicket, Nash making 49 before he was trapped leg before by Rob Taylor, but the runs continued to flow as Sam Northeast joined the opener.
Northeast made 37 before Clint McKay struck but Bell-Drummond was still going strong in partnership with Darren Stevens before a key two-over spell just as Kent looked like claiming victory.
He passed three figures but fell on 103, McKay again doing the damage, and Stevens was dismissed for 34 by Shreck in the next over to drop Kent to 253-6.
Shreck (4-74) also accounted for Matt Coles (2) but only a few more deliveries were bowled before stumps were drawn with Kent on 273-7 - Leicestershire claimed 12 points and Kent 10 for the stalemate.
Rob Keogh and Steven Crook hit centuries as Northants played out a draw with Lancashire at the County Ground.
The game was one of few this week where batsmen flourished, with Keogh and Crook finding scoring easy on the final day despite some tricky, blustery, conditions.
Northants lost just three wickets on the final day to finish on 391-5 in their second innings, after opening the morning in a spot of bother on 42-2.
Stephen Peters and Keogh, who came together at 13-2, showed the necessary caution and solid defence required, with Lancashire's attack keen on a third win from three fixtures this season.
Peters reached 14,000 career first-class runs on the way to a third successive fifty in Championship cricket. Particularly strong on the leg side, he made a well constructed 81 before hooking Jordan Clark to Simon Kerrigan half an hour before lunch to end a 125-run partnership.
Keogh added a further 53 with Adam Rossington, who made 23 before falling to Kerrigan, and he went on to his century off 146 balls. Six balls later, without adding another run, his innings was over with Clark claiming his second wicket of the innings.
But that would prove to be Lancashire's last success as Crook, who scored 91 in the first innings, scored quickly and made it to three figures before partner Josh Cobb had even reached 50.
Crook's century came off 90 balls and he would remain unbeaten on 102 when the captains shook hands on a draw - winter signing Cobb finished on 46 not out.
Derbyshire and Glamorgan played out a tame draw in Cardiff, where Scott Elstone stole the headlines with his maiden first-class century.
Elstone came in with Derbyshire in trouble on 32-2, Dean Cosker and Michael Hogan claiming an early wicket each, and proceeded to put on 177 with skipper Wayne Madsen.
He hit eight fours and a six, and had just made it to three figures (103) when the game was brought to an end. Madsen finished unbeaten on 72.
