Sky Sports understands Cook set for ODI captaincy role

The England and Wales Cricket Board are set to announce new one-day and Twenty20 captains at Lord's on Thursday, and Sky Sports understands Alastair Cook will take the reins as ODI skipper. A news conference at Lord's on Wednesday is expected to reveal that England Test captain Andrew Strauss will stand down from his role as 50-over captain, while Paul Collingwood is also expected to give up the Twenty20 captaincy. Sky sources say Test vice-captain Cook will be given the nod despite not being selected for the recent World Cup and only playing three ODIs in over two years. Strauss' decision to hand over the captaincy would not be unexpected after both he and team director Andy Flower admitted after the World Cup that they would review the 34-year-old opener's role in the 50-over side. Strauss was arguably England's best batsman at the World Cup, highlighted by his career-high 158 in the drawn match with eventual winners India. However, it is thought he will give up the 50-over game to prolong his Test career.

Cook surprise

While Strauss' resignation as skipper would not be a surprise, Cook's elevation would be a slightly left-field promotion after he was not chosen in the World Cup squad that bowed out at the quarter-final stage. Cook was the stand-out batsmen during the historic Ashes success, when he scored 766 runs, but was not included for the subsequent one-day series against Australia or the World Cup. In fact, the 26-year-old has made just three ODI appearances in the past two and a half years, all of which were made on last year's tour of Bangladesh when Strauss was rested. Cook, who has 26 ODI caps, was trusted with the captaincy in those games and won all three while also averaging 52 at the top of the order. As for the Twenty20 role, former skipper Kevin Pietersen could be given his wish to return to the captaincy after admitting his desire to return to the role last month, although young seamer Stuart Broad is also a contender.
