Former England batsman Mark Ramprakash has been named Graham Gooch’s successor as batting coach across all formats.

Ramprakash, 45, began working with the England team last May following a successful stint with the England Lions, along with another former international Graham Thorpe.

The pair were in contention for the full-time position, which has been handed to Ramprakash until at least September 2015, and he will begin in earnest when England travel to Sri Lanka later this month.

Paul Downton, the ECB’s managing director, said: “I am delighted to have appointed Mark. During his time with both the Lions and the senior team he has proved a valuable addition to the coaching group.

Ramprakash, one of the most formidable batsman at county level of all time, endured an intermittent England career that spanned 11 years and finished with a surprisingly low Test average of 27.

In 52 Tests he scored just two hundreds and was ditched by England eight years ago for a poor showing on tour in New Zealand in 2002.
