Phil Simmons has been sacked as West Indies coach.

Simmons had been in charge since the end of the 2015 World Cup, when he accepted an offer from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and left his job as Ireland's head coach.

He was informed of the decision days before the West Indies squad was scheduled to leave for the United Arab Emirates, where they will face Pakistan in three Twenty20 Internationals, three ODIs and three Tests.

Another former West Indies player, Joel Garner, has been placed in charge of the team on an interim basis.

A WICB statement read: "Effective immediately, the WICB today announced it has separated from head coach Phil Simmons. In a meeting of the Board of Directors, on September 10, this decision was taken.

"In recent times, based on the public pronouncements of the coach and the approach internally, we have identified differences in culture and strategic approach. The WICB would therefore like to thank the coach for his contribution and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.
