Play was finally abandoned for the day at 1pm on Wednesday. Over 10 centimetres of rain has fallen since the start of the Test on Sunday as the 'big wet' continues to cause widespread problems in New South Wales.

It is only the fifth time in Australia that two consecutive days of Test cricket have been washed out and the first time it has happened in 25 years.

Spectators will be given free entry to the SCG for the final day - but more rain is forecast.

A meteorologist told the Sydney Morning Herald: "For the wettest suburbs in Sydney, it's the heaviest rain they've had since last April, and it's pretty unusual for January. This is more than the monthly average in less than 48 hours."
