Misbah and Shafiq steer tourists to eight-wicket win
Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq both struck unbeaten half-centuries as Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the one-day series against West Indies at St Lucia.
The Pakistan pair shared an unbroken 134-run partnership for the third wicket to ensure the tourists passed the 222 target with eight wickets and 8.3 overs to spare.
Misbah carried his bat unbeaten on 73, while talented youngster Shafiq walked off the field having struck a chanceless 61 not out off 76 balls.
Darren Bravo (67) had earlier posted a battling half-century but West Indies were made to rue his run out after captain Darren Sammy sold him short.
Fireworks
West Indies were much changed from the side which lost heavily to Pakistan in the World Cup quarter-finals last month, with Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul notable absentees.
West Indies won the toss and decided to bat, with openers Devon Smith and Lendl Simmons providing some early fireworks.
But off-spinner Hafeez broke the partnership with the score on 30, trapping Smith lbw for 17, and Simmons then found himself heading back to the pavilion on 24 after edging a Saeed Ajmal delivery to wicket-keeper Mohammad Salman.
Marlon Samuels (two) barely troubled the scorers before his run out, but the arrival of Kirk Edwards at the crease steadied things.
Edwards put on a fourth-wicket stand of 59 with Bravo during a frustrating spell for Pakistan, until Riaz found his length with a delivery which Edwards pulled straight to Junaid Khan at deep midwicket for 28.
Bravo ploughed on and finally reached his fifty with a single in the 41st over, but his half-brother Dwayne managed just 14 before Riaz struck again with captain Shahid Afridi taking the catch at cover.
And Bravo was the sixth wicket to fall when a perfect throw from Ahmed Shazad allowed Salman to whip off the bails with the batsman stranded.
Skipper Sammy made the score look more respectable with his 29 off 17 balls, including two sixes, while Carlton Baugh added 10 to leave Pakistan chasing 222 for a winning start to the five-match series.
The total proved nowhere near enough as Pakistan showed just how true a surface the wicket was at Beausejour Stadium.
Opener Hafeez cracked 54 off only 45 balls at the top of the order as he and Ahmed Shehzad (22) added 68 for the first wicket.
Demise
Hafeez continued to find the rope with ease after Shehzad departed and brought up his half-century with a towering six over square-leg off the bowling of Devandra Bishoo.
But the West Indies leg-spinner was to get his revenge, inducing the right-hander into a false shot which Sammy pouched comfortably at midwicket.
It was Bishoo's second wicket of the match and continued his impressive form from the Twenty20 win on Thursday, in which the spinner took four wickets on debut.
Hafeez's demise brought Misbah and Shafiq together at the crease, and it soon became clear the pair were there to stay.
Misbah found the boundary three times and smashed a six on the way to his 50, while Shafiq hit seven fours to pass the half-century mark.
Even Bishoo (2-48) was unable to find an answer for West Indies, who looked to have resigned themselves to defeat long before Shafiq hit the winning run.
