Former India and Sussex captain passes away

Former India and Sussex captain Mansur Ali Khan, the Nawab of Pataudi, has died at the age of 70 from lung disease. Pataudi, who captained his country in 40 Tests despite suffering from impaired vision in his right eye after a car accident, was the son of Iftikhar Ali Khan - also the Nawab of Pataudi - who played for both England and India. Pataudi last month presented the trophy named in honour of him and his family to England captain Andrew Strauss, after the hosts' 4-0 npower Test series victory over India. He played 88 first-class matches for Sussex between 1957 and 1970 and scored more than 3,000 runs, and was previously an Oxford University Blue. "We are very sad to hear of Tiger Pataudi's untimely death," Sussex chairman Jim May said. "He was a legendary figure for his country, and is fondly remembered for all he contributed to Sussex cricket. "I met him at the recent Test match at The Oval when he was very much looking forward to visiting us at Hove later this year. "It has come as a great shock to us all, and our condolences from everyone associated with Sussex cricket go to his family." ECB chairman Giles Clarke added: "The Nawab was a very talented batsman and fine cricketer who will be remembered as one of India's greatest ever captains and he also made a significant contribution to the game as an administrator. "He will be much missed in cricketing circles both in this country and in India and we send our sympathies and condolences to his family."
