Tremlett steps in as England all-rounder's injury problems strike again.

Troubled all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been ruled out of England's one-day series in Sri Lanka due to his continuing ankle injury. Flintoff will head straight back to England for further tests on his troublesome left ankle and will not be travelling to Sri Lanka for the five-match one-day series. Chris Tremlett has taken Flintoff's place in Paul Collingwood's one-day squad, but the absence again of their talismanic all-rounder will be a big blow. England coach Peter Moores says that the tests are part of an on-going process of monitoring Flintoff's fitness. "This in an on-going process. We needed to test out how the ankle was and this tournament was ideal because he could only bowl four overs a match," said Moores. "Now he will go back to England for strengthening work and we will see where we go from there." Moores and England hope that resting Flintoff for the one-dayers will help his chances of being available for the following Test matches in Sri Lanka, but his problems in South Africa would make that target extremely hopeful.

Twenty20 struggles

Flintoff appeared to be struggling throughout the World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa, with the big Lancastrian hobbling and looking uncomfortable when bowling during the last couple of England games. After struggling against New Zealand, Flintoff was surprisingly included in the final Twenty20 match against India despite England already being out of the tournament. The ECB have insisted that no further damage was done to Flintoff's ankle during the World Twenty20. "At no time was further damage to the ankle sustained," said a statement on the ECB's website. "But unfortunately it was clear that his ability to increase the intensity of his rehab and participation could not be progressed. "Accordingly, after ongoing review and discussion with specialists, it is felt that the appropriate course of action is to allow time for the ankle joint to settle and recover before the process of further strengthening and assessment of the ankle is intensified." Flintoff has had three operations on his ankle and has been urged to change his bowling action to try and cure the long-standing problem.
