Batsman's unbeaten 79 guides Proteas home

JP Duminy steered South Africa to a six-wicket victory over West Indies in the first one-day international in Johannesburg. The left-hander made a career-best unbeaten 79 as South Africa made 176-4, overhauling West Indies' total of 175 with two overs to spare in a match reduced to 36 overs because of rain. Duminy came to the crease after the Proteas had lost their first two wickets for only four runs and shared stands of 55 for the third wicket with Jacques Kallis and 59 for the fourth with Justin Ontong. An unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 58 with Mark Boucher then carried the home side to their victory target.

Crucial stand

His partnership with Ontong was crucial, as they came together with the rain falling and South Africa behind on the Duckworth/Lewis method. They got their team ahead of the required run rate and then continued to prosper when the rain ceased, leaving West Indies struggling to control the wet ball. The West Indies were sent in to bat in seam-friendly conditions and were floundering on 81 for six before a sixth-wicket stand of 69 between Runako Morton (41) and Darren Sammy (51) gave them a competitive total. Sammy reached a maiden international half-century with a string of fine shots, including three sixes, two of them from successive Albie Morkel deliveries. Shaun Pollock, playing in his final series after announcing his retirement from international cricket, took one for 19 with an immaculate spell with the new ball and contributed to two run-outs with accurate throws from the deep.
