Breakdown of relationship with board forces Speed out

Malcolm Speed's tenure as the chief executive of the International Cricket Council is effectively over after a "fundamental breakdown" in his relationship with the rest of the board. Speed was not due to leave the top post until July, with Haroon Lorgat elected to take over the reins. However Speed will begin paid leave on Wednesday, with general manager David Richardson filling the role in the interim A number of issues brought about the sudden end to Speed's tenure, with his decision to oppose an ICC decision not to take action following an independent audit of Zimbabwe Cricket finances thought to have played a key role. A statement from ICC president-elect David Morgan read: "This change of plan is the result of a fundamental breakdown in the relationship between the CEO and a number of board members, including the president, over a variety of issues which include Zimbabwe. "Mr David Richardson, the ICC general manager - cricket, will serve as interim CEO until Mr Speed's replacement, Mr Haroon Lorgat, assumes the role at the ICC's annual conference at the beginning of July."
