Phantoms agree short-term deal for Windies batsman

Derbyshire have signed West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds as an overseas player for their assault on the Twenty20 Cup. Hinds had originally joined the Phantoms on a Kolpak contract, however the ECB blocked his registration due to his participation in the Indian Cricket League. However, the 31-year-old can now play in the 10 Twenty20 Cup group matches, the quarter-finals - if they qualify - and the LV County Championship match against Essex starting on June 29. "I have always been keen to bring Wavell to Derbyshire as he has all the qualities we are looking for - experience, ability and character," said head of cricket John Morris. "It hasn't worked out as planned but by coming in for the Twenty20 period he will give us a fresh impetus and real expertise in that format of the game. "He is an exciting player, contributes with both bat and ball and is just what we need for Twenty20 cricket." The signing of Hinds means Chris Rogers will take a mid-season break as was originally intended.
