James Anderson's sore back has prompted England to call up Darren Pattinson as cover for the second Test.
Uncapped Notts paceman called to Headingley
England have called up Darren Pattinson as cover for the second Test against South Africa at Headingley.
Nottinghamshire fast bowler Pattinson, 29, is a Grimsby-born former roof tiler who was raised in Australia. He joins the squad as cover for James Anderson, who has a sore back.
Hampshire's Chris Tremlett had already been summoned on Thursday morning due to Ryan Sidebottom's prolonged back niggles.
An England spokesman said: "Jimmy (Anderson) at this stage is expected to play and it really is precautionary.
"It is on the very off-chance that Jimmy and Ryan wake up tomorrow and have deteriorated."
Late developer
Pattinson was a late developer with Victoria who only made his first-class debut in 2006-07.
Having been recommended to Nottinghamshire by their overseas player David Hussey, he has made a strong impression at Trent Bridge and was a surprise selection in England's 30-man ICC Champions Trophy squad.
His inclusion, albeit only as cover, in the Test squad is even more of a shock given that three of the lauded 2005 Ashes attack, Steve Harmison, Simon Jones and Matthew Hoggard have been overlooked.
Pattinson's ability to swing the ball at pace has earned 29 first-class wickets in six appearances for his county this summer.
The make-up of England's bowling attack is further complicated by the
return of all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.
Captain Michael Vaughan confirmed Flintoff would bat at number seven at Headingley, but a decision on whether to play a four or five-man bowling attack is being left until Friday morning.
The four-match series remains all-square after England failed to force victory in the opener at Lord's despite asking South Africa to follow-on.
