Former India coach now helping plot their downfall

Greg Chappell's new role as assistant coach of Australia is of no concern to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Chappell had a controversial - and mainly unsuccessful - stint as coach of India from 2005-2007 and still works with Rajasthan Cricket Academy, where Australia are currently practising ahead of Border-Gavaskar Series. The head of Cricket Australia's Centre of Excellence, Chappell is also helping out Australia's Test squad in India. "We have no issues with his new role," said BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah. "He's no longer with us."

Communication

Shah added Chappell had failed with India because of his failure to communicate with the players directly. "Rather than talking to the players directly he was seen communicating to the players through the media," he noted. "By that I do not mean a coach should be essentially low-profile in his approach. Rather, he should be like a father figure to the players. "It's also important that he limits airing his views in the media." The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Series starts in Bangalore on October 9.
