Mushtaq Ahmed admits he would prefer to join Pakistan's coaching set up ahead of any proposed role with England.
The leg-spinner retired in August due to a knee injury and has since been linked with the job of England spin coach.
That role would involve working under head coach Peter Moores, who Mushtaq knows from their days together at Sussex.
While the 38-year-old confirmed his agent had notified him of an approach from England, he is reluctant to take up the role.
Undecided
"I am yet to decide on the issue," Mushtaq told cricketnext.com.
"The offer had not directly come from the coach (Moores). It only came through my agent. The coach had just expressed passing remarks about myself.
"I am more inclined to be associated with the Pakistani team (rather than England)."
Mushtaq already has international coaching experience having worked as an assistant during Bob Woolmer's time in charge of Pakistan.
