Ganguly's captaincy under threat

Sourav Ganguly could be axed as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders. Ganguly, the former India skipper, retired from international cricket last November but is planning to honour the remainder of his three-year deal with his home town Indian Premier League franchise. But Knight Riders' cricket manager John Buchanan has indicated he favours a change of on-field leadership. "We are still undecided on the leadership issue," the former Australia coach said. "I'd like to approach the captaincy issue a little differently, take a slightly different view and that has nothing to do with individuals and is certainly not intended to slight Sourav in any way. "Of course, those are my thoughts, but I've spoken about them to Sourav and some of the seniors in the team. "I should add it's still being discussed and nothing has been cast in stone."

Maverick idea

Buchanan indicated that he preferred multiple leaders for a single match. "Ideally, I'd like a group of leaders on the park, with all having the ability to captain. I'd really like to develop leaders," he added. "It's possible that the coach, Matthew Mott, could be the captain when the team's batting, for somebody who has just got out or is anxiously waiting to take guard, may not be in the best frame of mind to take critical batting related decisions. "Equally, it is also possible that the captaincy could be rotated during the period that the team is on the field. "As I've said, at this stage, it's only a possibility and should be treated that way."
