Trego in the form of his life

Peter Trego popped into the Cricket AM studio to discuss his role in a famous win for Somerset - as well as his hopes of an England call-up. The in-form all-rounder hit the headlines on Friday after his exhilarating 54-ball century helped Somerset to an astonishing four-wicket County Championship victory over Yorkshire. Somerset overhauled a massive target of 476 runs to win following the second highest successful run chase in the competition's 145-year history, the fourth highest in first class cricket in England and the eighth highest of all time. Trego hit six fours and nine sixes in a stunning innings - and just a few hours later he relived the experience on the Cricket AM sofa. "It was a fantastic day," Trego said. "Yorkshire batted on a bit longer than we thought they might - just to take us out of the game. "Arul Suppiah and Tres (Marcus Trescothick) got us off to a fantastic start and I was there at lunchtime eating my Angel Delight and thinking there was no chance of me going out to bat today. "All of a sudden we got the nod from the captain that we were going to go for it. It was one of those days where everything went for me. "For the first few balls I was scratching around and they had the inclination that I was sent out to do some hitting. I couldn't even ht the ball off the square and they made me very aware of that. "Then I hit 20-odd off an over and thought 'let's just run with it'. I was batting with the captain and he said if I fancied it, then just go for it." However, Trego was unable to party too hard after the famous win - as he was keen to make sure he wasn't late for his appearance on Cricket AM! "I was milking the celebrations walking off the field - and Brian Rose handed me a glass of champagne and a bottle of beer. "I took half a sip and thought 'I've got to drive to London' and so I put it down and did the right thing."

Form

Trego feels he is in the best form of his life - and has now set his sights on being called up to the England Twenty20 squad. The all-rounder feels he is perfectly suited to the short format of the game and feels he has performed well enough to have caught the attention of the international selectors. "The more I simplify the game, the easier it becomes," he added. "It's taken me a bit too long to work that out, but I literally just stand still and hit the ball as far as I can. "That's the role that has been given to me by the captain and coach and I seem to be thriving on it. "It would be nice to get some for of opportunity to test myself [with England]. I would hate to think that when my career is done and dusted that I wouldn't have had an opportunity to test myself against the best. "That would be really frustrating for me. I would rather go and play and fail than never get the chance. Obviously I've got to do enough to warrant the chance and hopefully 2009 is the year when I do enough. "It's just a case of runs and wickets for me. I get can't be ignored if I keep topping charts like the MVP for the PCA and the Sixes League from Sky. "If my name's out there, they've got to have a look at some stage, I hope."
